BRYAN — The Williams County Health Department is reporting its first case of travel-related Zika virus.

A 32-year-old woman, who recently returned from Jamaica, was informed earlier this week that her test was positive for the virus, said Rachel Aeschliman, director of nursing for the health department.

Ms. Aeschliman said the woman is not hospitalized. The nursing director said she spoke to the woman on Wednesday and counseled her on appropriate measures she should take going forward.

A female Aedes aegypti mosquito

Zika virus is primarily transmitted through a mosquito bite, and there is no indication that it can spread from person to person through casual contact. It can, however, be spread through sexual contact, according to health officials.

“Anyone considering travel who is pregnant or trying to get pregnant should contact their health provider before leaving,” Ms. Aeschliman said.

Due to the possible association between Zika virus infections in pregnant women and certain birth defects, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that pregnant women and women trying to get pregnant consider postponing travel to areas with Zika virus transmission.

There have been no cases of Zika virus transmitted through mosquitoes in Ohio.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, there have been 32 travel-associated cases of Zika virus found in the state, including one that was sexually transmitted.

The CDC has reported more than 1,800 travel-associated cases of Zika in the United States. A travel-associated case means that a person with Zika became infected during travel to an area with active Zika transmission.

The CDC has issued Zika travel advisories for parts of Miami, and the Caribbean, Central and South America, and the Pacific islands.
